Here's a review I wrote for my FilmClub a few weeks ago on Be Kind Rewind:
Prepared for an extreme laugh-out-loud film, I'm afraid to
say I was a little disappointed with Be Kind Rewind. I completely agree with my FilmClub leader
when she said the humour was more something to smile to than properly chuckle.
I feel my expectations were due to comedy genius, Jack Black being in a leading
role, after seeing his extremely amusing displays in films such as Kung Fu
Panda and School Of Rock.
The concept of the film though was a great one. After daft
liability Jerry (Jack Black) wipes out all the cassettes in Be Kind Rewind
video store after bizarre accident, he teams up with store clerk and best
friend, Mike (Mos Def) to reshoot all the films in store to keep the boss and
owner, Mr. Fletcher's (Danny Glover) business running.
I feel the concept had real potential but there just weren’t
enough obvious laughs for a Jack Black comedy but that may just be what I’m
used to.
There was heart to the story in a parallel storyline, but I
feel that the moral of which as just plonked at the end rather than sewn and
referred to throughout the whole story.
